Welcome to my eighth book review, today I will be summarizing the third book of the heroes of olympus series: the mark of Athena.
summary:The book starts with the Argo II making its way to Camp Jupiter. The flying ship, built by Leo, was filled with several demigods, Annabeth, Leo, Piper, Jason, and coach hedge the satyr. When they make it to camp, they notice that it had recently had an attack. Once on the ground via ladder Annabeth manages to find her boyfriend after 6 months of being apart.
The Romans decide to trust the Greeks and discuss the prophecy of 7, which requires the Greek and Roman demigods to work together. The Romans stop trusting the Greeks after their ship attacks the camp, Leo gets blamed. Annabeth, Percy, Leo, and Jason get kicked out of camp along with 2 roman demigods, Hazel, and Frank.
Leo does not remember attacking camp and does not have a reason why he would have attacked. Soon after the attack piper gets a vision, it tells her that they need to go meet Bacchus. With that information, they head to Topeka. When they find him, he doesn’t want to join their quest and he sends them to find Phorcys because he will give them information about Gaea
Gaea attacked the group on their way to find Phorcys and took control of Jason and Percy, then made them fight each other. Luckily Piper was able to break up the fight and then the group escapes. They realize that Leo was most likely possessed during the attack against camp Jupiter. But since they don't have evidence of that, the Roman demigod still cannot trust them.
They head-on with their journey to find Phorcys, on the way Percy has a dream. The dream is Otis and Ephialtes preparing to destroy Rome, he then dreams about Nico being trapped, Percy promises to rescue him through his dream. Then, he gets abruptly woken up by Annabeth because the ship just arrived in Atlanta. They find Phorcys there with the help of the mother of all sea monsters, keto.
Percy uses his powers to get Phorcys to talk about Otis and Ephialtes. He also tells him about Nico, he is being used as bait, so that the other demigods will fall into a trap. After their chat, Phorcys tries to trap them in an aquarium but fails. Once everyone is back on the ship, Percy tells everyone that they must find a map to lead them to the Athena Parthenos, which is in Rome.
Annabeth remembers seeing Athena examining a map while talking about the mark of Athena. At that time, she was given a silver coin and she was also told that if she joined forces with the Romans she would be disowned
The girls of the group go to see Aphrodite, she tells them the location of the map, more-less, it’s at Fort Sumter. On their way to Fort Sumter, they get attacked by Octavian, a leader of camp Jupiter. Annabeth gets the map after she conquers her phobia of spiders. She then meets up with Reyna, the other leader of camp Jupiter. The roman leader tells Annabeth that if the Greek demigods don’t return to the Roman camp to stand trial, they will be enemies for the foreseeable future.
Annabeth joins her friend on the ship so they can head to Rome to save Nico and retrieve the Athena Parthenos. When they get to Rome Percy gets a vision of camp half-blood, his vision reveals that the Greek camp is Gaea’s target. Gaea tries to make a deal that entitles she would spare the camp if Percy and Annabeth give themselves up so she can rise. Percy declines the offer.
Annabeth uses the ma the find the statue, she faces several trials along the way the last one being captured by Arachne, a giant spider lady. While Annabeth is busy the others go save Nico. Once Nico is safe and sound, they go save Annabeth, while doing so Percy and Annabeth fall into Tartarus along with Arachne. At the end of the novel, the other demigods head to Greece to try and save Percy and Annabeth from the depths of Tartarus.
