 Welcome to my seventh book review, today I will be summarizing the second book of the heroes of Olympus series: the son of Neptune. 

summary:

When Percy Jackson wakes up, he can’t remember anything except for a name: Annabeth. He then finds himself in a fight with 2 gorgons, Stheno and Euryale, claiming that he killed their sister. Percy runs away and eventually loses them. Next, he encounters an old lady, she introduces herself as June and gives him news that he’s a demigod.

The old lady gives him a choice, he can go to the sea where he can live happily, or he can carry her to camp Jupiter and in exchange, she will give him his memories back, he chooses the second option. On their way to the camp, he crosses the Tiber River with June on his back, he is stripped of his mark of Achilles that he gained previously but had no recollection of.

Right before they enter Camp Jupiter, they are attacked by the gorgons for a second time. Percy defeats them with help from two campers, Frank Zhang, and Hazel Levesque. Once safe at camp June reveals her real identity, she is the goddess Juno. She explains that Percy has been asleep for months and that his father is Neptune, the god of the sea. Various campers recognize Percy, but don’t know why he lost his memory, they decide not to reveal his past.

Percy joins the fifth cohort at camp Jupiter, later that day he participates in his first war game. At the end of the battle Mars, the god of war, appears to tell Frank that he is his father. Before he leaves, he sends frank on a quest and tells Percy to go with him., Frank also asks Hazel to go with them. The quest is to free the god of death, Thanatos, according to the prophecy that reads: "Go to Alaska. Find Thanatos and free him. Come back by sundown on June twenty-fourth or die.

During their journey, they learn a few new things. It is revealed that Hazel died during the twentieth century and came back to life recently, Percy learns that frank’s life force is connected to a piece of firewood, so if the stick were to fully burn frank would die and the trio discover that the goddess Gaea is waking up after a few thousand of years of sleep and plans to destroy the gods and the world.

Their first stop was Portland, they encounter a blind man named Phineas, a fellow son of Neptune. While in Portland they also befriend a harpy named Ella who remembers everything she read, which is a lot. The demigods decide to bring her with her because She was being treated badly and Hazel discovered that she may have read the sibylline books, book of prophecy before they all got destroyed.

They take a boat to Seattle, when they get to the Amazons warehouse, they get disarmed and put into jail cells. The queen of the amazons is having some troubles because Gaea brought her enemy, Otrera, back to life. Otrera took over the warehouse so there is a full battle. The queen, Hylla, gives them a risky escape plan that involves exploding cases of jewelry and stealing a horse that’s faster than the wind. Magically her plan works out, the fast horse, Arion brings them to Vancouver.

In Vancouver, they go to Frank's house to see his grandma. When they arrive his house is surrounded by laistrygonian giants, after a bit of fighting, frank is able to go inside to see his grandma. Mars is there and tells him about his family gift, certain members of his family can turn into any animal on command. when they drove away frank saw a swarm of bees fly out the window, he’s guessing that’s his grandma's safe and sound, the house, on the other hand, was not.

They follow the instructions Frank's grandma told them; they took a plane to Alaska. Ella refuses to take the plane, so Percy calls some friends to come and get her. A few bad things later it was time to free the god of death.

They reach the glacier where Thanatos is imprisoned, with some information from the god frank realizes that he must sacrifice some of his life stick to melt the gods’ chains. While frank does that hazel is fighting a giant and Percy is fighting an army of ghosts. Before Percy falls into the water, he retrieves the twelfth legion's golden eagle. Hazel and frank drag the giant to Canada so they can kill him. An animal transformation later, the giant is dead.

After they kill the giant, they go back to help Percy but find him on a glacier standing there angry. They head back to camp with a new chariot, they somehow make it back in four hours. Once at camp they are greeted by an army attacking the camp. With the help of the gold eagle, they defeat the army. After the fight is done a flying boat, Argo II, arrives with some Greek demigods in it and a metal dragon head on the front.

opinion:

The son of Neptune has a total of 513 pages and 52 chapters. this book is probably my least favorite of the series because I feel like it's the least action-packed. event tho this book is my least favorite I still have a favorite part, which is when the trio goes to Franks's house and he finds out about his family gift. I also like at the end when the Argo II arrives at camp Jupiter because that means the next book is when it starts to get interesting, it also means the prophecy of seven is about to start.
