the lost hero

Welcome to my sixth book review, today I will be summarizing the first book of the heroes of Olympus series: the lost hero.

Summary:

Jason has lost all his memories and does not even know his name. He wakes up on a bus, he was sure he wasn’t on a moment before. He was holding Piper’s hand, he thinks she’s his girlfriend. Most likely the boy in front of them is Jason’s best friend because he is talking his ear off. They tell Jason that they’re problematic teenagers who got sent to Wilderness School for reformation. The only person who hasn’t seen Jason before is the supervisor, coach hedge, everyone thinks Jason has been part of their class all year.

A group of ventis attacks the campers, Jason fights them off and saves Piper from death, in the process displaying his ability to fly. Coach Hedge is taken by a storm spirit. Soon after two demigods, Annabeth and Butch, arrive on winged horses and take Jason, Leo, and Piper to Camp Half-Blood. Annabeth and butch are disappointed they found these guys instead of their missing friend, Percy.

Once at Camp, Leo finds out he’s a son of Hephaestus, and Piper finds out she is a daughter of Aphrodite. These identities explain long-standing questions for them. When Leo was a little boy, he got exposed to fire and somehow didn’t burn, he later found out he could create fire, which is a trait some children of Hephaestus have. Piper has been able to persuade people with no effort for as long as she could remember, she once persuaded someone into letting her take a BMW from the dealership, it’s called charmspeaking, a gift from Aphrodite.

Leo has been getting visions of his Tia Callida. Piper has been having a strange voice in her head that won’t stop telling her to betray her friends and save her father, she didn’t know her father was in danger. As Jason, Piper, and Leo tell Chiron about their visions and voices, they realize that Hera has been captured. Shes trying to send a message to Jason to save her. She reveals that she was the one who took away Jason’s memories, but she does not reveal who her captor is.

When the campers gather around the campfire, Chiron reveals that Jason was claimed long ago. Jason announces himself as the son of Jupiter, but Jupiter was roman, not Greek, he was at the Greek camp. Rachel, the camp oracle, reveals that the Great Prophecy has begun. The prophecy states that a group of seven demigods must band together to save the world. She expands on the prophecy, Jason must go with a dove and a forge to save Hera, which seems to refer to Leo and piper. Leo uses his engineering skills to repair a broken bronze dragon that he names Festus, they use Festus as transportation on their journey.

The three begin their journey at the home of Boreus, god of the North Wind, where they met his daughter Khino. Aeolus, the god of wind told Boreus to kill all demigods on sight, but he lets them go, only if they agree to capture the venti and deliver them to Aeolus.

They continued their journey; they have to stop several times because Festus keeps breaking down. Every time they stop, they face a new challenge like, a few cyclops, Medea, the mortal villain come back to life, and King Midas, who was also dead and resurrected. Piper rethinks the idea of betraying her friends after King Midas tells them the giant Enceladus is the one who captured her father.

During their encounter with Medea, they retrieve the venti and coach Hedge. After escaping king Midas, they get in a rumble with some wolves but luckily are saved by the Artemis hunters and Jason’s sister, Thalia Grace. The hunters and Thalia bring them to Aeolus’s floating fortress. Aeolus is interested in helping them until a strange female voice in his head convinces him not to. They get ejected by an air chute, but Aphrodite rescues them. When rescuing them she tells piper that their true enemy is Gaea, mother earth. She’s the one who is resurrecting the monsters that keep disrupting their quest.

Leo, Jason, Piper, and coach hedge defeat Enceladus and rescue Tristan, Piper’s dad, with a bit of help from Zeus. Coach hedge takes care of Tristan while the demigods finish their quest. They reunite with the Artemis hunters in San Francisco at Wolf house. When they arrive, the hunters are already battling ogres and snow spirits. Khione, the goddess of snow they met earlier, reveals that she empoisoned Hera to assist Gaea.

Leo and piper free Hera while Jason battles the giant Pophyrion. When Hera is freed, she helps Jason by using her power to scare away the giant. During the battle, Jason almost dies, but Piper brings him back with charmspeak. Hera brings Jason, piper, and Leo back to camp.

Once at Camp, they’re relieved that their quest is over, however, they know there’s more battle in store. each character arrives more empowered. However, they also know there is more battle in store. They know now that there are to groups of demigods, greek and Roman. Hera took Jason's memory so he would forget his roman heritage and help the greeks. Now, the seven greatest Greek and Roman demigods must band together to defeat a common enemy. Before they start this quest to defeat Gaea they must find Percy Jackson who Jason assumes was sent to the Roman camp.

opinion:
the lost hero has a total of 557 pages and 56 chapters. I like the way this series is written because the chapters change narrators usually it's a rotation of 3 or 4 of the demigods, 3 in this case. my 2 favorite characters get introduced in this book, Leo and Festus. Leo is my favorite because he's the funniest of the 7 demigods in the prophecy and Festus is my other favorite because he is a giant living metal robot dragon, whats not to like about that.
