Welcome to my third book review, today I will be summarizing and giving my opinion on the third book of the Percy Jackson series: the titans curse.
summary:The novel opens with Sally Jackson driving her son Percy, Thalia Grace,
and Annabeth to a fancy private school to find Grover. Grover needs help bringing
two kids to camp half-blood. There, they a manticore, and bring back Bianca and
Nico di Angelo to the camp. However, during their battle, in which the Hunters
of Artemis assisted, Annabeth went missing. Bianca decides she doesn’t like
boys and joins the Hunters, a group of women who have pledged their lives to
their leader, Artemis.
Artemis sets out on a hunt for a monster that is a threat to Mount
Olympus and the Greek gods. She sends the Hunters back to Camp Half-Blood with
the rest of the demigods under the leadership of her lieutenant, Zoe
Nightshade. The
Oracle of Delphi interrupts their traditional game of capture the flag with the
hunters and recites a prophecy in which five must go find Artemis, who is in
trouble and rescue her. The prophecy also states that two of the five will die
on the journey. Despite this, Zoë, Thalia, Bianca, Grover, and phoebe, another
hunter, volunteer to go despite the oracle saying that 2 of the 5 will die. Phoebe
got suddenly ill so Percy decided to follow from afar on his Pegasus. Before Percys'
departure he frees a sea cow named Bessie and promises Nico di Angelo that he
will keep Bianca safe.
The journey takes them first into New York City, which then continues
into Washington, D.C. There, Percy spots Luke—another demigod who allied
himself with Kronos—Percy overhears a general directing some monster to attack the
demi-gods. Percy reveals that he has been following Thalia, Grover, Zoë, and
Bianca and tells them that they’re being followed. After defeating the monsters
set to attack them Zoë allows Percy to join them.
Zombies find them again in New Mexico, but they are saved by a wild boar
that carries them to a junkyard. Aphrodite warns Percy not to take anything
from the junkyard. However, as they cross, Bianca takes a small figurine for
Nico, and Talos, the giant metal guardian, awakens. Fulfilling the prophecy
that “one will die in the land without rain,” Bianca dies stopping Talos (89).
Mourning, Zoë reveals that she was exiled from her family after an incident.
After a stop at the Hoover Dam, they arrive in San Francisco and capture
one of Kronos's servants, he then tells them that whoever captures and
sacrifices Bessie will have the power to overthrow the gods. Then, the
manticore reappears, looking to capture Bessie and kill the heroes, but he has
no success.
Percy sends Grover with Bessie to Mount Olympus and, with the help of
Annabeth’s father, ascends Mount Tamalpais with Thalia and Zoë to rescue
Annabeth and Artemis. This brings Zoë back to the home from which she was
banished, and she helps them get around the dragon to fight her father Atlas
and Luke. Artemis is trapped holding up the sky, which is “the titan’s curse”
of the novel’s name. Percy takes Artemis’s place holding up the sky, and she
battles Atlas. When Zoë tries to distract Atlas, he hits her, but the
distraction gives Artemis enough time to recover and send Atlas flying back
into Percy, who lets go of the sky in time for it to fall back on Atlas. Thalia
also defeats Luke, seemingly killing him. With Atlas trapped and Luke gone, the
heroes saved the world. However, Zoë dies of her wounds and Artemis creates a
constellation in her honor.
On Mount Olympus, they find out about the prophecy about one of the big
three children. Thalia decides to take Zoë’s place as Artemis’s lieutenant and
joins the Hunters, its now impossible for the prophecy to be hers, but it could
still be Percys. Before they leave, Poseidon warns Percy that Luke isn’t really
dead.
Upon returning to the camp, Percy has to tell Nico that Bianca died.
Nico is enraged, and his anger opens up a crack in the earth before he runs
off. This makes Percy realize that Nico is a son of Hades, so the prophecy
about the children of the Big Three could also be about him. At the end of the
novel, Percy decides that Nico has had enough suffering, and he claims the
prophecy as his, then goes home for the holidays.
opinion:
The titan's curse has a total of 312 pages and 52 chapters. I love this book because my favorite character from this series is introduced. My favorite character is Nico, he is mysterious and powerful, he gets even better in the next books. it was quite sad when Zoe died, getting killed by her own father, that must not be enjoyable. Sadly Bianca's death didn't really affect me, because I didn't get the time to really connect. I'm saying this for the third time, but yes I would recommend this book to anyone, but only if you are planning on reading the whole thing.
